Paperboard sleeve sliding over a primary carton for modern branding

What is Sleeve Packaging?

Sleeve packaging—also known as carton sleeves, belly bands, or slipcovers—is a printed paperboard wrap that slides over a product, tray, or inner carton. Manufactured by PM Packaging, sleeves deliver a sleek, premium look, enable easy varianting, and reduce materials versus full cartons.

Popular Types of Sleeves

  • Belly Band Sleeves: Minimalist strips that wrap around the center of a box or product.
  • Full-Height Slipcovers: Cover the entire product height for maximum branding real estate.
  • Tray Sleeves: Designed to slide over food trays or rigid setup boxes.
  • Multi-Pack Sleeves: Bundle multiple units (cans, tubs, jars) together.

Note on Materials

We specialize in Paperboard/Cardstock Sleeves. If you are looking for heat-shrink plastic labels for bottles, please note that is a different technology (shrink sleeves). Our solutions are eco-friendly, paper-based, and structural.

Design & Measurement Guidelines

How to Measure a Sleeve

Fit is critical for sleeves. We recommend sending us the physical product/container to ensure the perfect slide-on resistance (coefficient of friction).

  • Measure the Outer Dimensions of the primary container (L x W x D).
  • Determine Coverage: Do you want full coverage or ends exposed?
  • Clearance: We typically add 1/32" - 1/16" tolerance depending on board thickness.

Engineer-Friendly Design Tips

  • Thumb Notches: Place on the side panels to help consumers slide the tray out easily.
  • Glue Zones: Keep artwork free from glue flap areas (usually 1/2" - 3/4").
  • Orientation: Ensure text reads correctly when the sleeve is vertical vs. horizontal on shelf.
