Custom Drawer Boxes (Sleeve & Tray)

Slide open boxes—often called drawer boxes, sleeve & tray, or matchbox packaging—offer a sophisticated unboxing experience. Unlike standard top-open boxes, the sliding action creates anticipation. Whether you choose ultra-sturdy rigid setup boxes for high-end retail or cost-effective folding carton sleeves for lighter items, we engineer the friction for a perfect, controlled glide.

Rigid Slide Open Boxes vs Paperboard Slide Boxes

Matchbox-Style Packaging

The classic "matchbox" feel is achieved through precision engineering. We calculate the air gap tolerance to ensure the tray doesn't fall out too easily but glides smoothly when pulled.

  • Friction Fit: Controlled slide resistance
  • Safety: Stop tabs prevent accidental drops
  • Interaction: Thumb notches or ribbon pulls required

Cosmetics & PR Kits

Perfect for multi-step product reveals. Use extensive finishes like foil and spot UV on the sleeve to attract attention, with a secure molded pulp insert in the drawer to hold glass bottles or jars.

Popular For: Serums, Cream Sets, Influencer Kits

Jewelry & Accessories

Small-format "matchbox" styles are ideal here. A ribbon pull adds a tactile luxury element. Soft-touch coatings prevent fingerprints, keeping the unboxing pristine.

Popular For: Rings, Necklaces, Cufflinks

Tech Accessories

Organized compartments within the drawer (using paperboard dividers) imply value and precision. Great for cables, earbuds, or high-value peripherals.

Popular For: Earbuds, Cables, Hard Drives

Limited Drops & Gifting

Brand storytelling is key. Use printed liners inside the sleeve or on the tray floor to reveal a message as the product is removed.

Popular For: Corporate Gifts, Limited Editions

Design Guidelines for Engineers & Buyers

Tolerance & "Controlled Slide"

Humidity and paper wrap thickness affect friction. We engineer a specific clearance (often 1-2mm) to ensure the tray doesn't bind in humid conditions or fall out too loosely.

Stop-Tab Design

To prevent the tray from being pulled completely out and dropping the product, we can integrate a hidden paperboard tab that acts as a stopper at the end of the slide track.

Window/Cutout Placement

Avoid placing die-cut windows too close to the sleeve folds, as this creates weak points. Center windows for structural integrity and optimal product visibility.

Finish Durability

High-friction sliding can scuff delicate finishes. We recommend anti-scuff matte lamination or selecting finishes (like spot UV) that are placed away from high-contact sliding zones.

How to Measure a Slide Open Box

For accurate quotes and fit, always measure based on the Inner Dimensions (ID) of the tray where the product sits.

  • 1
Length (L)The longest side of the opening of the tray.
  • 2
Width (W)The shorter side of the opening of the tray.
  • 3
Depth (D)The vertical distance from the floor of the tray to the top edge.

Tip: Don't forget to account for the thickness of your insert (foam/pulp) when calculating the required Depth.

Cost Drivers to Consider

Construction

Rigid setup is the most expensive due to manual assembly and shipping volume. Folding cartons are most economical.

Wrap & Print

Specialty papers (textured/pearlescent) cost more than standard C1S/C2S paper. Full external print adds cost.

Finishes

Foil stamping and proper embossing require tooling dies (one-time cost), while spot UV is often cheaper.

Inserts

Molded pulp has high setup costs but low unit costs. Foam is easy to customize but can be pricey per unit.
